How Medical Device Reps Can Prospect New Territories
An unfamiliar territory becomes manageable when it is divided into markets, specialties and repeatable research passes. Start broad enough to see the landscape, then narrow quickly.
Map the territory before ranking accounts
Plot current customers, known competitors, major systems, target specialties and travel constraints. The first goal is orientation: where are the dense clinical corridors, independent-practice pockets and long-distance gaps?
Search by metro area and then by smaller ZIP or radius segments. A territory that looks balanced at the state level can contain very different local markets.
- Major metros
- Secondary markets
- Specialty clusters
- Current customers
- Travel barriers
- Uncovered areas
Create a qualification ladder
Use several levels instead of a binary lead label. A research candidate has basic specialty and location fit. A workable prospect adds a verified business and contact path. A priority account has a clear use case and timely reason for outreach.
This ladder keeps weak records from dominating the route while preserving them for later research. It also makes the team’s definitions visible.
- Research candidate
- Verified practice
- Relevant services
- Contactable account
- Timely trigger
- Priority prospect
Work one pocket deeply
Choose a cluster with enough high-quality accounts for a realistic day. Research websites in advance, prepare one concise reason for each visit and include backup stops nearby.
After the run, update every disposition. The fastest way to learn a new territory is to preserve what the field proves, including closed locations, group affiliations and unexpected business names.
- Select an anchor cluster
- Prepare account briefs
- Confirm hours
- Build route legs
- Carry backup accounts
- Record local knowledge
Expand through measured passes
Repeat the process across adjacent zones. Compare how many records became verified practices, conversations and follow-up—not only how many pins appeared.
The objective is a dependable territory model that improves with use. Public sources provide breadth; direct field work provides the depth and current context that no static list can guarantee.
- Review conversion between stages
- Refresh stale records
- Merge duplicates
- Archive poor-fit accounts
- Revisit priority specialties
- Add verified imports
